A rural broadband company was lost in a sea of competition.
Case Study: Connection as a Growth Strategy
Challenge
A rural broadband provider in rugged Maine had built an impressive network of more than 100 access points spanning over 2,500 square miles, yet remained invisible in the marketplace. Axiom was losing ground to national giants like GWI and Xfinity. Confusing, disjointed messaging, a lack of clear positioning, and no scalable partnership framework left the company unable to attract funding, municipal collaborations, or community recognition—despite its infrastructure and deep local roots.
Path
The client, partners, and I began by recognizing that broadband alone wasn’t enough. Real growth would come from creating meaningful connections—between Axiom and the communities it served, its technology and practical needs, and its story and the right partners. Market and competitive analysis revealed white space in public-private partnerships, grant funding, and community education. We repositioned Axiom as an innovation leader with the heart of a teacher: a distinctly Maine company that connects people to opportunity, not just the internet. The work centered on building clear brand architecture, a repeatable execution system, and communications that made complex technology feel human and accessible.
Deliverables
Brand Reimagination & Visual Identity: Led the complete rebranding of Axiom, a rural Maine broadband provider, with a new identity anchored by the unifying tagline “Every connection counts.” This single promise bridged internet infrastructure, human relationships, and educational access. Redesigned the logo so the letter “A” became a symbolic bridge, visually reinforcing Axiom’s role in connecting technology with the communities it serves while preserving its authentic Maine roots.
Digital Presence & Audience Clarity: Designed and launched a new primary website alongside a dedicated microsite that cleanly separated for-profit services from community education programs. This eliminated audience confusion and better communicated Axiom’s full value proposition to municipal partners, customers, grant funders, and local residents.
Solutions Framework & Sales Enablement: Created the Axiom Solutions Kit: a systematic, scalable methodology and practical toolkit that equipped the team with a repeatable process for storytelling, partnership development, and sales execution. This framework translated complex technology into clear human value and supported successful outreach to partners such as Microsoft for white space broadband initiatives.
Integrated Collateral & Thought Leadership: Developed high-impact partnership and sales presentations, along with comprehensive marketing collateral, that maintained a consistent, confident, and professional voice across every touchpoint. These materials positioned Axiom as an innovation leader capable of competing against national giants while staying true to its community-focused mission.
Axiom proved that a regional brand, rooted in place and purpose, can attract international partners while staying unmistakably local.
Results
The reimagination of Axiom delivered more than a refreshed identity. It created a brand with genuine connective tissue, one that wove internet infrastructure, human relationships, and educational access into a single, coherent promise.
A new website and dedicated microsite cleanly separated for-profit services from community education, eliminating audience confusion. The Axiom Solutions Kit gave the team a systematic, repeatable methodology and practical toolkit to tell their story consistently and sell effectively. Partnership and sales presentations translated advanced technology into clear, human value, while supporting collateral ensured every touchpoint carried the same confident, professional voice.
What emerged was a distinctly Maine brand with the heart of a teacher. Axiom now offers free software and life skills classes to Washington County residents, turning infrastructure into trusted community relationships. Microsoft partnered to deploy TV white space technology for last-mile rural broadband. The company is now active across more than twenty-five communities in Aroostook, Penobscot, and Lincoln Counties.
The brand stands apart from national competitors while remaining deeply rooted in Maine values. It proves that when technology is framed through clarity and genuine connection, it becomes more than infrastructure—it becomes a durable platform for community trust and lasting impact.
Before
Prior to the rebrand, Axiom’s visual identity felt generic and disconnected from its mission. There was no sense of place, no warmth, and no hint of the deep community roots or human purpose that defined Axiom’s work in rural Maine. The result was a brand that felt invisible.
After
The new logo and visual system replaced the generic, stock-like aesthetic with a confident, intentional design centered on connection. The letter “A” was reimagined as a bridge, a powerful visual symbol of Axiom’s role in linking technology, people, and opportunity across rural Maine.
The tagline “Every connection counts” serves as the brand’s anchor, expanded to reflect three meaningful layers: every internet connection, every human connection, and every connection made through education counts.
Hyper-Local Visual Strategy
Elevating the brand required a visual narrative that matched its operational scale without losing its local soul. Leveraging the powerful documentary photography of Nicole Wolf, an exclusive asset library was curated to anchor the identity in the authentic spirit of Maine. This ensures that even as Axiom pursues high-stakes enterprise contracts, its messaging remains fiercely loyal to the communities it connects.
Outgrowing a Transactional Identity
Axiom’s brand footprint mirrored that of a small, utility-focused provider, and was hampered by disjointed messaging that frequently over-indexed on administrative transactions and collections.
Before
Today, Axiom commands a premium presence alongside national giants. The re-engineered brand communicates with clear authority as an infrastructure leader, capable of planning and delivering mission-critical digital connectivity from Maine to the global stage.
After
Architecting the Visual System
To transition Axiom from a localized utility provider into an enterprise infrastructure leader, the visual identity required a system that felt premium, highly intentional, and endlessly scalable. Rather than treating the logo as a static asset, the core geometric architecture of the brand mark was extracted to build a comprehensive corporate identity (ID) ecosystem.
Strategic Assets for High-Stakes Partnerships
Developed a suite of high-impact sales enablement tools and executive assets, empowering leadership to articulate a unified, authoritative vision when securing public-private partnerships and managing government relations.
The "Axiom&" Framework:
An Engine for Connection
To bring Axiom’s core belief, "every connection counts" to life, the "Axiom&" concept transforms the ampersand into a modular, dynamic branding engine. By locking the corporate mark to an open-ended variable term, the identity shifts from a static utility provider into an easy-to-understand collaborative force multiplier.
“I have worked with a number of media and content providers in my career and I can endorse Rachel as being absolutely world class. Her content and marketing materials and vision brought my company to life in a way none before she had. ”
